OK, I admit right up front that I may not know what I'm talking about on this...

The focal mechanism looks like something I've heard about called a compensated linear vector dipole (CLVD), which has been relate to upwelling of magma. Basically, there isn't so much slip across a fault as it is being pushed apart.

Browsing the area of the epicenter in Google Maps I found a label for the Boot Heel Volcanic Field. Not much info on wikipedia, but it indicates it to be 27 to 35mya. The field seems to be quite large and this is just the western edge of it. I don't see any obvious volcanic terrain with my untrained eye.
