How do you prepare for tsunamis that come only every 1,000 years or so?

This is the issue Swiss geoscientists are wrestling with as they study the country's big lakes.

Some of these water bodies around the Alps have been known to experience huge waves that were driven by sub-surface landslides, which were themselves triggered by earthquakes.

The researchers' work indicates such hazards still exist but the likelihood of future events is very small.

Thanks Brian

You are doing a lot of informative posts...trying to save Earthwaves by yourself (along with increased interest because of a lot of large quakes).

I forwarded this to 3 people including I.W. (Island Wife) who work on the past record of quakes recorded in dated "Seisoturbidites" or "Turbidite-Homogenites".

The fine details of a deposit in a core can show patterns of the water sloshing back and forth that can be from a seiche.

But, I was in a pretty intense discussion back in January because I was concerned that a manuscript was implying that all M6.8 and larger quakes were recorded, when in fact it is pretty clear they are not.

That said, I won't say what that paper is.

To a small degree, maybe trying to set an example. But even if not, I know there would be interest in these topics. It's why we're here, right?

As an aside, I want to mention that in the short time since I've opened the website up to the search engines, the hits have increased dramatically. Looking at my website statistics most of it is junk, though. But that's to be expected. Forums attract a lot of spam and hacker bots.
