something going on near Istanbul? - Island Chris - 11-17-2015

The email below I just sent to a few scientists working with me on the North Anatolian fault system offshore Istanbul. I am having trouble with the zoom on the map at the link below: I can't find it. If a line of microquakes really lit up the fault where it strikes WNW-ESE to the SE of Istanbul, and if this is unusual, then it could be concerning. But, we see things like that all the time in California and nothing happens. We have to be really careful about what we say, as there could be some alarm among the people of Istanbul if we are not responsible.

the email:
There was a M4.2 quake at the Istanbul bend or a little bit west of it. I can't find the focal mechanism: I was having a little trouble with the Kandilli page including the map.

There also seems to be a line of small quakes along the Prince's Island segment in the last 24 hours.

I emailed Professor Hulya Kurt at Istanbul Technical University; she felt it, and also sent the focal mechanism. Below is my email back to her and the others:

Interesting, is a normal-slip quake, in an area where there is longer term contraction. But, the nodal planes both strike NW-SE, and that is the orientation of normal faults in Marmara Sea; NE-SW are thrust faults (or at least components of normal and thrust).

Once again greed conquers reason.
